Everything begins when graphite touches paper.

Some folks are wont to start sketching right onto the Cintiq screen. I am a old-school, I guess. There is something about a pencil and paper, the feel of the contact, the tactile nature of the two that, in my humble opinion, can never be surpassed.

This rough sketch was the beginning of a design for a Cuban cigar box inlay paper. I have become very enraptured by the chromolithographic designs of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century cigar marcas, companies like Fonseca, Por Larranaga et al.
